My Students

This is my sixth year as an educator in Baltimore City, my third year in a classroom teaching 1st grade. Most of my students only eat at school. We are a Title 1 school that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner if you are part of an after-school program. Violence is a normal part of our students' days. They come to school for a sense of safety, structure, routines, and more of all; to feel cared for.

This year I would love to implement flexible seating in my classroom.

Flexible seating allows children to have a sense of independence and control over where they can sit. Flexible seating also allows children to feel comfortable, change locations within the classroom, and remain calm and focused during lessons.

If there is one thing I've learned teaching in Baltimore City is children need to feel in control, they need to be able to move frequently, and they need to be comfortable and safe within the classroom.

My Project

Flexible seating allows children to feel empowered. They have a choice within the classroom on where to sit, focus, and learn that is most conducive to their learning style. Traditional desks and chairs can make children feel territorial over their space but flexible seating creates a sense of community while children are able to share space and supplies, take turns in different locations, and use different seating options. Another amazing benefits of flexible seating is engaging children's senses. Many flexible seating options stimulate a child's sense of touch which allows them to focus and process information more clearly and readily.
