Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My 5th grade students live in a low income community. My school is a Title I school, in Staten Island, where 100 percent of the students qualify for free lunch. My students face many challenges beyond that of financial issues. Many come from one parent households, live in public housing, come from broken homes and some are in the foster care system. They often come in unprepared and unable to complete homework assignments because of the lack of resources or no help at home. However, despite all their hardships, many of them show up, ready and eager to learn and socialize.
In spite of all their hardships, I am inspired by them daily.
They are spirited, entertaining, charming and eager to learn. But, it isn't easy for them as they start the race of life facing serious obstacles. Their circumstances should not preclude their chances for a good education. I want them to have a leveled playing field. I am thrilled to be their teacher and I want to offer them the best of me and anything else that I can provide for them.
My Project
I teach reading and writing in my classroom. This bench would be used to help create a comfortable reading area in my classroom.
I want to create a welcoming classroom library where students look forward to grabbing a book, sitting down and losing themselves in a great story.
My main goal is to create lifelong learners who learn to love reading as much as I do. So, I'd like to create a warm, welcoming and comfortable place for them to read. Most of my students don't get the opportunity to visit a public library. Therefore, I want the students to be excited about entering their classroom library. Having a Flex-Space Classroom Storage Bench like this would help to create a classroom reading area that students will love.
