This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach 35 diverse, dynamic, and hard-working kindergartners as part of a Dual Spanish program. My homeroom consists of 17 students and my co-teacher's homeroom has 18 students. These students each have their own set of academic needs and capabilities and it is my job as their educator to juggle them all to ensure each child's success. My day begins with my homeroom and after recess, I welcome in my second crew into my classroom for the afternoon. These 35 students work incredibly hard every day, in English and Spanish. They are learning how to read and write in both languages, as well as getting their science/health content (in English) and mathematics/social studies content (in Spanish). Kindergarten is challenging for any child, but when you add in a second language, the task at hand becomes much larger. My students rise to the occasion on a daily basis and strive to achieve their best.

My Project

Kindergartners are not built to sit still while they learn and work. Kindergartners are active by nature and need to find outlets for their energy that will not be disruptive to their learning or the learning of their peers. Flexible seating within the classroom offers many benefits to students, especially those just beginning their educational journey.

Research shows that flexible seating aides in student attention span, increases student engagement, promotes a sense of community/collaboration which improves students' social skills, benefits students with ADHD and autism (along with several other special needs), encourages students to become independent learners, and make students more physically fit!

It is no surprise that with all of these benefits, studies have shown that flexible seating also motivates students to want to attend school. I can only imagine what all of these benefits would do with students who are also striving to become bilingual! Our school engages our students in a rigorous program and curriculum where students are expected to stay on par in both English and Spanish. I want my students to have the best environment possible in order for them to be successful and I also want school to be fun and engaging for them. Flexible seating such as mobile student desks, wobble chairs, stools, and stability balls will allow me to provide my students with an inviting, engaging, and developmentally appropriate classroom and I hope will make the beginning of their educational journey one full of positivity, kindness, and growth.
