Flexible Seating for Differentiated Learning

Help me give my students flexible seating options. My students need flexible seating which provides them choices between independent, partner, or small group learning configurations.

My Students

Our middle school has a diverse student population that includes students from five school districts. More than one-third of our middle school students come from low-income households. As a Language Arts teacher, I strive to create an inviting, comfortable classroom that fosters a growth mindset.

Student engagement is increased when students are comfortable in their classrooms and provided with options to make choices.

I currently teach Language Arts to four classes/sections of 7th and 8th graders of which two classes are inclusion. Some of my students are classified (IEPs or 504s) and ELLs. My students have various grouping choices but are currently limited to sitting in the same type of desks with attached chairs. In addition, the current furniture (desks with attached chairs) is uncomfortable to sit in for long periods of time. In addition this outdated furniture does not allow for various seating configurations.

My Project

Flexible seating allows students to choose between independent, partner, or small group seating options. The different seating options support movement within the classroom and allow students to choose appropriate seating in which they feel the most comfortable.

Movement in the classroom paired with flexible seating improves student engagement, participation, and collaboration.

Middle school is the perfect time when adolescents (including students with special needs) can make decisions based on their learning styles and unique needs. Having multiple seating options available, such as eight stools and four office chairs, promotes the students' emotional and educational progression towards becoming successful adolescents. Students will have opportunities to select what seating option is most appropriate for them based on daily classroom activities.
