My students need flexible choices on where to sit in the classroom. I am requesting 5 hokki stools so they can move freely, 3 bean bags, 1 rug, and 8 sit upons.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"If we truly want to prepare our students for the real world, we need to put them in responsive, dynamic environments that reflect life outside of a traditional classroom. And what’s that life outside like? Full of choices, where adults are responsible for their own learning." - Kayla Delzer
Every morning my students walk into the classroom and have a seat at their tables.
They are often uncomfortable, and it is not the best learning environment for their little minds. I have a very diverse classroom with 10 out of my 18 students being Latino, 2 with ADHD. 75% of our school district is living in poverty.
My Project
My inspiration for this came from a second grade teacher named Kayla Delzer. She believes that each classroom should feel more like a Starbucks and less like a cemetery. "Think about when you go to Starbucks to complete some work. Why do you choose to work there? Where do you choose to sit? I usually gravitate towards the comfy seating choices like the couches and big chairs, and yet, I see people choose the tables and chairs over and over again. Regardless, when you walk into Starbucks, you have choice. You get to choose where you sit. No one checks you in and directs you to a spot, telling you that you must sit there for the remainder of the day to do your work. If you need to get up, walk around, or choose a different seat, you are free to do so."
With these chairs and rugs, students will be able to stretch their minds and bodies! They will have flexible choices about where they would like to learn and work.
As quoted earlier, Kayla Delzer stated that "If we truly want to prepare our students for the real world, we need to put them in responsive, dynamic environments that reflect life outside of a traditional classroom.
And what’s that life outside like? Full of choices, where adults are responsible for their own learning." My students will learn how to make smart choices in their seating arrangements, and will become more comfortable in their learning environment.
