Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is an excellent example of public elementary education.

We are diverse: We are a neighborhood school that serves neighborhood kids, of which nearly half live in Austin's second largest public housing community.

Our wonderful programs and campus culture have also allowed us to serve a large number of families who have chosen to transfer to our school.

We are bi-literate and bicultural: the majority of our students have been learning Spanish as a second language since kindergarten.

We are green: our students have weekly science lessons in our school garden, we have a green classroom and a chicken coop.

We're Bobcats: we "persevere, we are responsible and we are respectful."

My Project

Flexible seating options will greatly impact student learning. Schools across the country are re-conceptualizing the class seating arrangement in order to maximize learning, productivity, creativity and enjoyment.

Flexible seating has been proven to increase student performance, motivation and well-being.

Like adults, young people have varied seating preferences. Yoga balls, cushions and bands for desks will allow students to choose from a variety of seating options.

For the 2016-2017 academic year, I only had reading boats and pillows. These were very popular among the students. Additional seating through this project will allow every student to experience a flexible seating option such as bouncy bands, or a wobble stool, floor chairs, beanbags.
