My Students

My school is a unique place. Our excited learners include Somali, Ethiopian, Mexican, Vietnamese, Thai, African-American and white students. Students of all socioeconomic and racial backgrounds come together to challenge one another academically and socially. Our staff strives to foster a community of socially conscious problem solvers that will be prepared to take on our world's problems of the future.

The 3rd graders at our school are inquisitive and ready for a challenge!

They are entering the phase of their reading lives where they are transitioning from learning to read to reading to learn and it is a challenge, but one they are ready to take on.

My Project

This year we will be diving into a new English Language Arts curriculum that has an emphasis on independent reading. Students will build stamina in independent reading which will be made easier by having a choice in where they sit and on what they sit!

Research shows that students are able to focus and do their best work when they are comfortable!

The new teaching table will allow students (and teachers) the ability to sit together and learn without kicking one another under a rectangular table. The wobble chairs will allow them the choice to sit somewhere where they can wiggle. The new carpet and floor chairs will go in and around the classroom library so that students can have more comfortable seating while selecting texts to read. Finally, the dividers will provide a distraction-free "office" space for serious students ready to work!
