My Students
A typical day in my 6th grade introduces the challenge of allowing them to socialize about content. In order for them to stick to the content, it must be highly engaging. That's where flexible seating comes in!
Allowing students choices in seating has been demonstrated as having a positive effect on student achievement.
Our new school has generously allowed us 1:1 technology, but the furniture arrangements are not friendly for technology organization and collaboration.
They are very energetic and love to socialize! My school is upbeat and encourages that energy to maintain engaging lessons. We read and discuss content as much as possible from bell to bell!
My Project
Our district is very fortunate to have purchased portable devices for each 5th and 6th grade classroom to provide our students with one to one technology. This is an important step in transforming our classrooms so we are able to provide students with a 21st century skills set to prepare them for college and career readiness. Students in my district are afforded with technology skills they may not have access to at home.
However, new opportunities in technology bring new classroom environment and management needs.
Highly engaged students are often seen slumped over dated desks and furniture. My classroom has a strong need for ergonomically sound furniture to promote student health and engagement with our new technology.
Studies state flexible seating arrangements may be correlated with improved student learning and test scores. I have requested equipment that would allow me to convert tables and desks so students may stand and work. I have also requested stools that allow students to be actively moving while they learn.
