This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My energetic kindergarten students are English Language Learners (ELL) with a variety of learning styles, who are inquisitive and creative. Their level of English language proficiency varies but their love and eagerness for learning is the same. My class is one of three kindergarten classrooms and is the only ELL class. Our Title I school has 100% free breakfast and lunch due to the high poverty within our school boundaries.
My ELL students are curious, enthusiastic, creative and ready for any kind of challenge.
They thrive when exposed to visuals/realia, kinesthetic, hands-on and musical activities to support their different learning styles. My goal is to make learning in their second language fun, motivating and engaging. I want them to feel comfortable and encouraged in their classroom. In this class, we build a community of learners who care about each other and support each other's learning.
My Project
Creating a positive learning environment that meets my students’ needs is very important for their success. Flexible seating is one way I can meet the needs of each student individually. Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. During independent work times they choose a location in the classroom that works for them. Currently my students can choose to work in a variety of locations in our room such as tables, sitting under tables with clip boards, or sitting or laying on the floor with a clip board. Making sure my students are comfortable is essential in motivating them.
My students are noticeably more engaged in their work and less disruptive of their peers when they are given a choice of where to work.
The wobble chairs and cushions that I have selected will provide my students with additional seating options to make more effective learning choices. The wobble stools will allow my students to sit at a table and still be able to have some movement. These will be also be extremely beneficial for some students that just need to get the wiggles out. The comfy floor cushions will allow for additional comfortable floor seating options. They are lightweight and can be easily used in many areas of the classroom. I have seen how choice can positively affect my students’ work and behavior and hope that the additional options will help us grow even more!
