My students need bins and cubbies for their materials, rugs and pillow lap desks for when they are sitting on the floor. These final items will complete my flexible seating set up for the classroom.

My Students
"Sitting still is overrated. It makes sense for the opera or for meditating, but in most classrooms and child care centers, it's given far more honor than it deserves. Children need to move." -Tom Hunter from National Association for the Education of Young Children.
I have a fantastic group of 2nd graders.
Each one is so uniquely individual in a class that's culturally diverse. They are a lively, creative, and bright group of children. My students come every day eager and ready to learn. We are a community charter school with strong family commitment, located in the beautiful canyon of Topanga, CA. My students have many benefits that students in other areas do not. A supportive PTA/Youth Association supplies teachers/students with a wide range of basic materials however, the economy has hit our families hard, and they are now more limited with how much they can help us.
My Project
With flexible seating options the children are able to pick a spot around the room utilizing a variety of seating choices to complete their work.
Flexible seating options allows all types of learners to be engaged in their work.
Some children chose the traditional chairs and tables while others opt to stand at a standing desk, use a exercise balls, or wobble stool. This allows for a favorable learning environment for a variety of learners.
I plan to lower tables allowing the students to work and sit at floor level. The rugs will go under the tables providing a space for the students to sit. When students are sitting on the rug they will be using the pillow desks as a hard surface to work on. The bins and cubbies will allow the students a location to keep their materials that are not being used at that time.
Research suggest some benefits of flexible seating include burning more calories, using up excess energy, improving metabolism, increase motivation and engagement, creating a better oxygen flow to the brain, and improving core strength and overall posture. It is clear why physical activity is linked to higher academic performance, improved behavior, and better health.
