This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a kindergarten special education teacher in a 12:1 self contained Title I school in the Bronx. The children in my classroom have different levels of academic, communication, social, and independent functioning skills. They are all very special and they each have their own strengths as well as areas that present more difficulty for them. My students are able to learn many of the same things as students in the general education classroom setting, but they simply require specialized instructional strategies, repetition of information, sensory based activities, assistance in communicating, etc. I love teaching them because every day is different.
My Project
Flexible seating in a classroom gives the students the opportunity to choose their own comfy spot to do their work. Flexible seating allows them to wiggle, rock and bounce and encourages students to find their best spot to stay calm, focused and productive. Traditional seating can usually cause conflict and possessiveness among the students, their space and their belongings. Flexible seating encourages students to share both and it encourages them to take turns in different locations and with different seating options. Many flexible seating options stimulate students’ sense of touch. This type of stimulation can help children focus and process information. Sensory input is especially helpful for students with disabilities and flexible seating is fun!
