This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As soon as my kids walk in the door, I know its going to be a day full of adventure. They are all full of character and joy and fill the classroom with laughter. I work at a Title 1 school in East Los Angeles, California. Most of my kids come from low income neighborhoods and are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom.
Despite the many challenges they face, I want them to have a safe space in the classroom where creativity and meaningful learning experiences can happen.
My kindergartners are always moving around our classroom and show a lot of zest for learning. They love to get lost in their books and explore the world around them. I want to make sure that I create a space that allows them to take risk and make their own choices. By creating this classroom culture, I hope I inspire them to be true to themselves and make choices that will benefit their learning experiences.
My Project
All of our students have their own way of learning and as teachers we are always looking for new and innovative ways to differentiate lessons. Well, why not do that with classroom seating?
By creating classroom aesthetics that will benefit all learners, my students will have a choice and build responsibility that will prepare them towards a successful academic career.
"We need to put them in responsive, dynamic environments that reflect life outside of a traditional classroom." An environment full of choices in which they become responsible for their own learning. Giving them the power and the choice to select where they will work will help them build an understanding that the work isn’t optional, but choosing where they work is. The wobble chairs I am requesting will specifically help students who need to move a little bit more. They are a great sensory strategy to promote engagement and attention in the classroom.
