Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I teach in an urban school where I focus on enabling students to achieve their full potential as productive, caring, informed human beings by providing them with a rigorous, comprehensive education suited to their unique needs and abilities. I have decided to offer flexible seating in my classroom, because who wants to sit at a desk ALL day? I am teaching a class of fifth and sixth graders in a self-contained classroom. All of my students come from an economically disadvantaged background and receive free breakfast and lunch. My students work hard and are eager and excited to learn and grow.
Flexible seating will allow my students to be excited about coming into the classroom each day.
Having a choice in where they sit gives them a sense of ownership in the classroom. They will choose the type of seating that suits them best and will be able to switch seats for different subjects. They also know that my classroom is the safest place to make mistakes and to grow from them. My students reflect on their progress, not on their grades. I believe that my job goes beyond our students' achievement.
