My Students
I teach special education Kindergarten and my wonderful students all have various special needs. They are incredible kids who have challenges with communication, behavior, social skills, and various developmental delays. My students love learning and at times they are unable to focus their attention.
Flexible seating options will allow them to move their bodies while still attending to tasks.
Incorporating sensory play and exploration is very important for these young students. They are still learning how to integrate their senses in order to accomplish daily tasks at school.
My Project
I would like to incorporate more things that provide sensory input for my Kindergarten students with special needs. Many children with various disabilities have the need for specific sensory experiences throughout the school day. Providing appropriate sensory input for children helps them stay focused and more engaged at school. One way to meet sensory needs is by providing flexible seating options in the classroom. I am asking for a couple of different seating options, wobble cushions, and fidget bands for student chairs.
Increased attention supports more engaged learning which will benefit my students in all academic areas.
Allowing children to have tactile experiences in the classroom is also a great way to provide sensory input. I am looking to purchase sand to put into our sensory table that will allow students to have experiences with different textures and materials. Theraputty is another great resource I would like to purchase for use with students with sensory processing difficulties.
We all need to integrate our senses in order to accomplish daily tasks. Creating more sensory opportunities in my class will not only benefit my current students. Many students will benefit from these items for years to come.
