My Students
I provide speech and language therapy to Kindergarten - 8th grade students with a wide variety of disabilities and needs. My school is in a low-income/high poverty neighborhood of Chicago’s west side. Our scholars face many challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite these challenges, students come to school everyday full of energy and excited to learn.
Each of my students is an individual and has differing needs to succeed in the classroom.
The students I work with have increased difficulty understanding the world around them and communicating their thoughts and feelings with their teachers and peers. I want to create an environment in the speech room where students feel safe, comfortable, and excited to learn and communicate with others.
My Project
Flexible seating and sensory therapy supplies will help my students feel safe and comfortable in their learning environment. My group of diverse learners has a wide array of needs when learning and the seating and materials will help me meet their needs during every session. The flexible seating will help children with ADHD focus and maintain attention during therapy sessions. Games will help children with expressive language disorders think strategically and . Sensory materials will help children with autism relax, maintain calm, and overcome their fears.
The donations to this project will help my students feel more comfortable and ready to learn.
Therapy will help them feel more confident and less frustrated when talking with peers. Speech therapy can also help them improve reading comprehension skills and encourage them to read. Most of all though these supplies will give my students a safe, accepting, and supportive environment to learn.
