I'm a Special Education teacher and literacy coach supporting teachers and students in kindergarten through fifth grade in an elementary school in Red Hook, Brooklyn. This school is a Title I school, and the majority of the students I support receive free breakfast and lunch.
The neighborhood my school is located in contains one of New York City's largest public housing developments, and most of my students reside there.
Due to the geographic location of the neighborhood, there are few trains and bus routes servicing the community, so my students are very isolated from all of the bells and whistles of New York City.
Creating a comfortable classroom environment is critical for our students and helps achieve high levels of student engagement--and we all know that when students are actively engaged and invested in their learning, they make the most progress.
I am requesting a swivel chair as an alternative seating option to allow students freedom and movement within the classroom. While wobble chairs are a more typical choice for flexible seating, not every student has the core strength or balance for one. This swivel chair provides the movement certain students need but also the support of a chair back and arms.
I am also a variety of Clixo magnet toys. I have a handful of them already. My students love to build with them, but it's not enough for more than one student or particularly large creations. These toys are hands-on items for brain breaks after long periods of work. The copy paper, tissues, and Clorox wipes are everyday necessities to keep the classroom running smoothly!
