Despite teaching visual arts and ceramics at the high school level, I am finding that students have difficulty focusing on their projects. As education slowly transitions out of the pandemic, teachers are finding that their students were not able to learn coping mechanisms or strategies to emotionally regulate while in their structured classes. There is a generation of students who were not able to learn the social structure or social cues of an education due to having to learn online.
Regardless of the student's ability, with the purchase of flexible seating and adaptive art tools, students will be able to be successful in visual arts or ceramics by learning how to focus their learning which will better prepare them for real-world application.
The adaptive art tools will allow students of various physical and mental ability levels, to use fine art tools to create works of expression and creativity alongside their peers. Tools used in both visual arts and ceramics demand a level of fine motor skills that not every learner can achieve. By using pencil grips or adaptive handle aids, students will be able to create and be expressive!
Using flexible seating, students will be able to choose how they best learn by either using a soft cushion or a wiggle chair to bounce their feet on an elastic band. The incorporation of flexible seating will teach students how to advocate how they learn and focus.
