My Students
My students are a combination of 4th and 5th grade students in a self-contained classroom 12:1:1. This school year we will be learning math, ELA, science, and social studies. I have 4 girls and 6 boys in my classroom which consist of six 4th graders and four 5th graders. My students enjoy being in the classroom, but need daily structure and consistency in their environment. They make instruction time and the environment fun for me to teach them. Sometimes my students need flexibility or options to change their seating in the classroom.
This gives them opportunities to be supported academically and encourages the students to stay focused, calm and productive in the classroom.
A flexible seating classroom can create an environment for better health and better education, especially in a 12:1:1 setting. I am so excited to work with my wonderful group of students this year.
My Project
I teach in an urban Title I public school combined as an elementary and middle school from grades Pre-K to 8th, with special education classes. At my school there are over 90% of students who come from low-income households. Federal funding provides free breakfast and lunch daily for our students. Our classroom lacks the appropriate furniture which is considered standard in an elementary school classroom due to district under-funding. My students are forced to utilize furniture that is suitable for middle or high school students.
As a special education teacher, I've learned that the environment plays an important role to my students academic growth.
If students are comfortable it makes them more eager to be engaged and learn effectively. Their environment must be consistent with routines but must provide modifications when needed and that can include flexible seating.
By having flexible seating in the classroom, my students will be free to make a choice of where they feel is the best seating for their learning. Giving students a choice will help them learn how to make appropriate choices which can make them more successful in the classroom. In addition to becoming successful in the classroom, it also helps reduce the amount of behavior issues that can occur during instructional time.
The donations that you provide to our project, will not only help to improve and increase student attention and focus, but will definitely help to increase their academic achievement during this school year. I am so excited to see how my students will benefit from having flexible seating become apart of their academic environment.
