Our school population is richly diverse. We are a Title 1 school with many 1st generation students in the United States. We have students from many cultures and English is a second language for many of them. Parents are involved in student learning and partner with the school. Student achievement is valued by our school community of students, parents, and staff.
My students are in a 1 to 1 Chromebook classroom and students love to collaborate with technology.
Team projects and technology-based learning are emphasized in my classroom.
My Project
Students in my classroom are encouraged to actively collaborate with other students and be engaged in classroom lessons. In traditional classrooms, students sit for an average of 4.5 hours and then continue to sit an additional 7 hours when at home. This prolonged sitting is not healthy. According to Dr. James Levine of the Mayo Clinic, "Sitting as little as 2 hours continuously increases the risk for: heart disease, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, cancer, back & neck pain, and other orthopedic problems." Research has also shown that students who stand while they learn have better attention and focus in class. Standing also encourages a movement rich collaborative environment. Incorporating work tables where students can stand while they learn will foster a healthy environment where active learning can occur.
