My Students

My goal as a Kindergarten teacher is to provide my students with a calming, welcoming, and safe environment. Kindergarten can be a rather stressful time for 5 year olds, being that it is their first time away from home and in a structured school setting for most of them. The environment, in my opinion, can make or break that anxiety.

My students come from all different income levels and home lives.

My school is a Title 1 school in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area (TX).

The items that I am requesting will provide my students the ability to work where/how they feel the most comfortable. I feel that at a young age it is important. I am also requesting books to nurture a love for reading. I have a library full of books in my classroom that I encourage them to read - and that I read to them. However, I love the idea of a "listening center" where the students can listen to an interactive version of a story. I have requested quite a few books - most of them Disney, as that is our school theme this year!

My Project

I teach Kindergarten, which means the first part of my year is teaching students their name, how to hold a pencil, and social/emotional skills. Our students usually come with a bit of anxiety - being that for the most of them - this is their first time away from home and in a school setting.

Part of the items that I am requesting are square and circle tables to cater to different activities that we do in the classroom such as Writers Workshop as well as fun chair options (fuzzy chairs, colorful stools, bouncy bands for the active students) that will allow for a more comfortable and flexible sitting environment.

I am hoping that this will be more inviting and welcoming as it will seem more fun than just a "regular table and chair" for my sweet Kinder friends.

I am also requesting books on CD and CD players for a listening station. It is vitally important that kids are read to - not only will it help them with their reading skills but it also nurture their own love for reading. My goal is to have a book and CD library that they can choose from and sit down and interactively listen to a book in addition to me reading to them. I have a smaller version in my class already and it is one of their favorite places in the room.
