This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
We have about 280 students, and the average class size is 20 students per teacher. Our district has a high mobility rate so our time with the students is very precious! They typically enter kindergarten below level, which makes the primary grade levels so important. The students are wonderful with a strong desire to learn.
Having flexible seating in our classroom will help keep student minds alert and focused on academics.
Flexible seating gives students more empowering choices and the ability to learn in a more inviting environment.
Our school does not have any private funding or a parent teacher organization to fund-raise. We are only able to stock our rooms with supplies and resources using our own money. I have been a teacher for 10 years in the same district, but this year I am currently teaching my third year of first grade. The students deserve the best, and I want them to desire to be lifelong readers!
My Project
Flexible learning space give students choices. There has been many studies that show students learn better when they are able to move around, instead of being stuck in a desk all day.
The classroom learning environment has a major impact on student achievement.
Students are able to collaborate with others and develop a better sense of community when they have flexible seating choices.
When students are allowed to move around while learning, it can have a positive impact on their on task behavior. There are many benefits to flexible seating. Students will see improvement in classroom community, student collaboration, sensory input and positive student choice when flexible seating is available.
