This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach first grade in the small town of Holly Hill, South Carolina. My classroom consists of 15 first graders, most of whom come from a high poverty area. My students are caring, curious, and full of life!

My students are all unique learners, which makes our classroom such a special place.

My goal is to continue catering to their eagerness to learn and discover more about the world. I can do this by providing my students with the opportunity to work in a comfortable classroom which targets their diverse needs. Some of these opportunities that would highly benefit my students include flexible seating and data-driven personalized learning. In this way, I can successfully encourage choice and independence because my students are actively engaged in learning.

My Project

For a first grader, remaining seated at a traditional desk for the entirety of the day is neither comfortable nor engaging. The majority of my young learners are unable to be still or reflective, as they tend to be impulsive and frequently struggle with sensory issues and anxiety due to external factors. Similarly, many of the students I serve are dealing with attention deficit disorders, autism, dyslexia, and other learning challenges. For these reasons, my students have significant difficulty connecting with themselves and others in a meaningful way. This compels me to take action!

Engaging in frequent wiggle breaks, yoga sessions, and dance parties are currently the highlight of my students' days.

However, my goal is to make every part of the school day an exciting and fun learning opportunity. I am confident that this can happen with flexible seating options for my students because they will have the freedom to move about the classroom and learn in a way that best suits their learning style.

The bouncy desk bands, wobble chairs, and stability discs will improve my students' focus because they will be able to move their bodies without getting off-task or distracting their peers. The carpet spots will help my students take ownership of their learning by remaining in a spot of their choice during instruction. The organizational materials will help me support my students in having classroom systems in place for daily routines.

Your donation will be transformational for my students' academic experience because they will gain the confidence necessary to advocate for their preferred learning style and become leaders of their own learning. Please help me make this possible for them!
