My Students
Every child has the ability to be successful in school, regardless of age, race, ability or disability. I am a special education teacher to 24 amazing second graders all of which have their own unique qualities, talents, and strengths. Many of my students come from low-income immigrant family. The students in my classroom also have their own unique set of challenges. They deserve a classroom that is conducive to their learning needs. My eager-energetic second graders enter the classroom ready to learn, discover, and explore.
My Project
Flexible seating allows my students to take ownership of their learning, they are able to try out and decide how they can best learn in the ever-changing classroom. I have students who are having troubles with attention and focus. Allowing the students the freedom to have different seating options as well as the freedom to move as needed, will be the most beneficial to these students who struggle on a daily basis to stay at a desk.
These flexible seating options like Flex-Space wobble cushions and chairs will be incorporated during independent work time where students will have a rotation schedule to find their comfortable cozy spot to engage with their work.
During independent work times, they choose a location in the classroom that works for them. Currently, my students are choosing to work in a variety of locations in our room such as: at different tables, sitting under tables with clipboards, or sitting or laying on the floor with a clipboard. Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them. The products that I have selected will help my students by giving them additional seating options to make more effective learning choices. The wobble stools are adjustable and will allow students to sit at desk/higher tables but will still allow some movement. These will be extremely beneficial for some students that just need to get the wiggles out. They can also be used as an alternative chair if needed! The comfy floor seats and the mats will allow for additional comfortable floor seating options. They are lightweight and can be easily used in many areas of the classroom. It is very important to allow students to have choices and options. This will help my students in decision making which is a very important skill to promote.
