This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I LOVE teaching third grade. This pivotal year in elementary education is both extremely challenging and rewarding. This year, I have the privilege of working with the most hardworking, creative, energetic and inquisitive students. They come in all shapes, sizes and backgrounds, yet they each have an equal love for learning. They have a thirst for knowledge unparalleled to any class I have ever taught, and I want to give them the world. As third grade is a very structured year, there is less time in the strict curriculum to allow for the expenditure of my student's energy. My solution to this problem is to provide my students with flexible seating options to promote healthy movement during structured tasks.
Providing my children with flexible seating options will allow them to satisfy their jitters, fidgeting, anxiety and/or overall energy into healthy, non-disruptive movement that will promote improved attention during seated, structured tasks.
I believe that these alternative seating options will also make seated learning more fun for my students. These seating options will also afford my students with improved posture necessary for participating in seated tasks for longer periods of time.
My Project
The use of flexible seats has empowered my students' ongoing learning. Students bring up the seats like the jellyfish, seat wedge or balance ball seat to the promethean board during instruction. They are eager to use a seat and have been more productive during teacher led groups, and independent learning.
Allowing the students to make a choice of where to sit with their seats has made them excited about learning and coming to class.
The new seats I selected will give the students additional seats to share. The adjustable wobble seats will allow the students to adjust the chair up and down as needed for their tables. The wobble seats can help students get their excess wiggles while still allowing them to complete tasks! The go anywhere chair will also allow for the students to use during outside reading and they are light and easy to carry.
I have been able a witness of a major improvement in my students' engagement with flexible seating. I can only imagine what having more seating available for more student during the day will do for their success!
