Flexible and Fun - Giving Kids a Choice

My students need various flexible seating options such as stability balls, stools, low coffee tables for floor seating, and a rug for our comfy reading area.

My Students

I teach 6th grade English language arts in a small town in South Carolina that has a large ESOL population and students who come from low-income households. Since my students are just starting middle school, they go through a lot of changes throughout the year. They move from the elementary mindset, to the independence of middle school. They have to learn how to take control of their learning and manage their time wisely. They also need to become responsible, independent critical thinkers, who take pride in their learning. My students are creative, inspiring, and never cease to amaze me!

I am blessed to have the privilege to inspire my students to find a love for reading and writing, and I am honored to be part of the start of their middle school journey!

My Project

My students are just beginning their middle school adventure. In order to foster a positive learning environment that will involve collaboration, it is important to provide students a choice when it comes to where they learn. 6th graders need to become independent, manage their time wisely, and take control of their own learning. Part of this is being able to find an area in the classroom where they learn best! Whether it be sitting on stools and working with a clipboard, to bouncing as they work on stability balls, to getting comfy in the reading area, student choice is important.

I believe it is my job as an educator to foster a love for learning, and if students can choose to sit where they learn best, they are one step closer to enjoying their time in the classroom.

However, I need your help to make this possible! Not only will it benefit my upcoming students, it will benefit many students to come. I want kids to enjoy their time in my classroom so they can focus on learning, instead of how uncomfortable they are! Thank you in advance for believing in my vision for a positive, comfy, and flexible learning environment!
