Our school is a K-6 elementary school located in a fast growing community. The student body is known as "the stars" and classrooms have a child-centered focus.
The mission of our school is to equip students with the skills, knowledge, and decision-making abilities to positively shape their future and to develop students who are responsible, accountable, and committed to excellence.
My classroom consists of 25 creative, curious and unique 2nd grade students. Our classroom mission statement is to listen, learn, love, and lead. We accomplish this mission by building a classroom community with core values of kindness, hard work, integrity and a belief that everyone is capable of learning and success.
My Project
I want to create a classroom environment where students are actively learning, engaged, enthusiastic, and relaxed. I also want to help my students feel empowered by having some degree of choice and control over their environment. Flexible seating allows students to choose where they work and with whom. It also allows them to change their location and positions as needed.
Children need to move in order to stay alert and focused.
Flexible seating allows children to wobble, rock, bounce, lean or stand. When a student is uncomfortable he/she can be distracted and unproductive.
Flexible seating encourages students to share space and supplies. It also encourages them to take turns through cooperation.
Flexible seating also allows opportunity for student collaboration. Students can easily and quickly pair up, work in small groups, or have whole class discussions, without moving heavy furniture.
Many flexible seating options stimulate students’ sense of touch. This type of stimulation can help children focus and process information. Sensory input is especially helpful for students with ADHD, ADD, and ASD.
Above all, flexible seating helps make learning fun!
