I just moved from NYC to Pennsylvania and will be working at a public school near the city of Pittsburgh. Our school has limited funding available. My students come from diverse backgrounds and hard working families. The school is a small K-4 Elementary School and does have funding to put towards classroom furniture and supplies.
My new classroom has no furniture, supplies, or books for me to organize and have available for students to enjoy.
This year I will be teaching three classes of fourth graders Social Studies and Science. We have a great Science Curriculum that has many online elements that I would like to explore with my students.
My students love sitting around the room and laying on the rug that we currently have to complete assignments. While the rug is fine it moves around and I feel is not the safest option for a classroom full of energetic fourth graders. I would like for my students to have access to comfortable and safe places to work at all times throughout the school day to explore science concepts and conduct experiments.
My Project
I have created an inviting space for my students in our classroom. We use tables instead of desks and the students choose where to sit on a daily basis instead of being assigned seats.
Having comfortable flexible seating options will allow me to create a schedule for students to rotate using our new chairs.
I had these seats in New York City and left them there for those students to continue using at the school. Now at my new school, I would also like for my students to enjoy flexible seating.
I have three classes and there are many students who have special needs and would benefit from having the option of not sitting at a desk all day long.
