have such an amazing group of diverse learners in my classroom. Like every 3rd grade classroom, we have lots of wiggles and movement. Two of the main activities in our classroom are our guided reading and guided math groups. These require students to sit in a group at a table for 20 minutes at a time. Guided reading is a key component to a literacy block. While we have quality reading materials to use during this time, the seating in our classroom for this station needs updated. Most of our stools are broken from multiple year use, and the kids are having to drag over their heavy desk chairs to have a comfy place to read to me at the table. Also, many learners/readers are anxious and tend to bounce or rock in their seats, these stools are designed to be durable and withstand that daily kid wear and tear. I have found if I allow them some wiggle time, they do a much better job staying focused. I have decided comfortable seating options would provide the best opportunity for my students to show even more engagement and growth while allowing them to get their wiggles out.
My students are hard working and motivated learners.
Allowing them movement while learning will only improve our outcomes.
