My students need Flat Stanley books to improve literacy and help them make connections within their community, state, and country at large.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Many students have never ventured outside their neighborhoods. Through the eyes of Flat Stanley, they will learn about communities across the state and maybe, even the country. On top of that, as a culminating activity, they will engage in digital storytelling highlighting Stanley's adventures.
Our diverse school is home to about 300 students who come from various ethnic backgrounds, but mainly African American and Hispanic.
In fact, we service many students who are newly arrived English Language Learners. Consequently, their experiences and background knowledge are limited. As indicated in the school's current action plan, the barriers that hinder student achievement in literacy are higher order complexity and the limited use of hands-on experiences.
This project will enable students to enhance their grasp of literary text by providing them an opportunity to digitally tell their experience. This project is an excellent culminating activity that not only enhances students’ ability to improve oral and written language, identify themes, and use new vocabulary, but it also provides them with a chance to make real world connections with curriculum.
My Project
Flat Stanley on the Red Carpet is a school wide initiative. The books will be used to improve literacy from Kindergarten through 5th Grade. Teachers will engage students and their parents with Flat Stanley lessons and activities. As a culminating activity, students will document Flat Stanley's adventures through a digital storytelling project with images and recorded narrations. The classes' final films will be converted into a movie style DVD to be shown to parents, students, and other invited guests during a Hollywood style film festival, complete with a red carpet, paparazzi, and awards.
The donations to this project will help an entire school make real world connections with people and places outside of their neighborhood through the help of a simple character.
And the bonus is that students will get to showcase their learning Hollywood style. "I believe that every person is born with talent," says Maya Angelou, and so do I. By the end of this project, students will understand that the sky's the limit!
