This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Every year students across the state of Nevada celebrate Nevada Reading Week. The theme this year is "One World, Many Stories". The Mission of Nevada Reading Week is to inspire and instill the joy and importance of reading across the state. This year Nevada Reading Week will be celebrated on Monday, February 27th- Friday, March 3rd, 2023.
On March 1st our themed reading day is "Flashlights with the Golden Knights!" Each student will bring a flashlight to school so they can read in the dark on this special day.
They will also be encouraged to wear Golden Knight clothing to school too since we have a game that night. Since many students cannot afford to buy a flashlight or do not have one at home, I want to provide several small child sized flashlights to give to each teacher. This way they can hand out flashlights to the students who need one.
Since our very popular Vegas Golden Knights hockey team has taken the city by storm, I plan to do a themed room transformation on this day as well. We will make our classroom look like T-Mobile Arena, the lights, the sounds we are going to go all out with your help! Students will pretend to purchase VGK items from the Arsenal (VGK Store) to practice their math skills, they will measure hockey sticks and pucks and even work on their PE skills by trying to make a few goals in our outdoor library quad. We will be creating a VGK gift basket (book, plush and Pizza Hut Gift Card for a classroom pizza party) for the winning classroom of our secret reader of the day contest! With your help we can provide all the extra flashlights and VGK décor to celebrate Nevada Reading Week in style.
