Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The clock is ticking for my juniors. I teach U.S. History to 11th grade students in a high-need school comprised entirely of new immigrants who have four years or less living in the country. English is obviously a hurdle they struggle to overcome. Over 90% of the students receive free lunch. The school's mission of high expectations and high support is yielding strong results, and we are on track for a higher-than-average graduation rate for our first senior class.
To graduate from high school and move on to college, students in this state must pass five Regents exams, one of which is U.S. History and Government. For these new residents of the country, the history of the United States is entirely new to them. Therefore, getting prepared to pass this exam while learning English presents a special challenge for the students and teachers.
Many students do not have Internet resources at home, nor do they have a complete textbook for home study. These flashcards provide an interactive tool that can help them quickly close the information gap and review for this rigorous examination. The idea is classic: an important vocabulary term, historical figure, Supreme Court case, etc. is presented on one side and the explanation is found on the other. Last year's students raved about these cards. My students can be seen practicing after school and even in the subway!
The problem is that I do not have enough cards for the 90 students who need them. Your help will ensure that my students, America's next generation of future citizens, will be well-equipped to obtain a college education while they are motivated to do so. Students who use these resources to succeed in their classes and on the rigorous Regents exams will enter the next phase of their lives with confidence and knowledge of the fundamental principles of our government. They will be very grateful for your kind support.
