"The challenge of history is to recover the past and introduce it to the present." -David Thelen
I teach Language Arts and Social Studies to 47 fifth graders each day.
My students come from diverse backgrounds with different levels of experiences and different levels of exposure to both historical and current events. Despite these differences, it is my job to make sure each student receives equal learning opportunities.
My Project
It is a strong desire of mine for my students to truly love studying the history of our country and the history of other parts of the world. I love hearing their questions and remarks as they learn new things about what brought us, as a country, to the nation we are today. With the rise of interest in graphic novels, I know my students would love having these types of books to support their Social Studies standards. Students will love using these graphic novels and history related books to delve further into the knowledge they have obtained through their Social Studies lessons.
Having graphic novels and other high interest Social Studies books will allow my students an opportunity to develop their knowledge above and beyond what he or she has learned in class.
Obtaining this knowledge and sharing this knowledge with their peers will help them develop into stronger readers and will allow them the opportunity to better understand the different eras and events throughout our history as a nation.
