My Project
My students are curious, creative middle schoolers who love rolling up their sleeves and getting hands-on with science. They come from diverse backgrounds and bring unique perspectives to our classroom. Many of them learn best when they can see, touch, and experience concepts instead of only reading about them. When students get to experiment with real materials, they feel like scientists, and that builds both their confidence and their excitement for learning.
This project will bring chemistry to life by letting students make their own bath bombs as part of our OpenSciEd Chemical Reactions & Matter unit.
Students will investigate how different ingredients interact, test proportions, and observe chemical reactions firsthand. To make this possible, we need both bulk ingredients such as baking soda, citric acid, and cornstarch, as well as reusable lab tools like mixing bowls, measuring cups, and molds. With these supplies, every student will be able to design, mix, and mold their own bath bomb, taking home a fizzy product of their own experiment. This activity doesn’t just smell good; it helps students connect scientific concepts to everyday life. They’ll see how chemical reactions work, learn to carefully measure and mix, and practice lab safety while creating something they can be proud of.
With your support, my students will experience science hands-on by creating real chemical reactions, apply math and measurement skills in a fun and meaningful way, work collaboratively in small lab groups, and take pride in their learning by bringing home a finished bath bomb they made themselves. For many students, this will be the first time they’ve done a lab that feels like real science. They’ll remember not just the fizz of the bath bomb, but the feeling of being a scientist who can investigate, create, and make sense of the world.
