My Students

As a librarian in a low-income/high poverty school, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of school. Despite the many challenges they face, my students are eager to learn. Academic success does not come easily or quickly. I strive to create a media center that is warm, safe and welcoming while maintaining a fun, creative learning atmosphere. When most people think of the library, they think of a place where you go to search for a book. I want the Library Media Center is to be so much more than that. I want it to be a place where students can learn, design, and emphasize STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math).

My students are creative, clever and very spontaneous.

They like to move, they love to read and love lots of positive attention. They are all eager to learn, to perform, to read, and to express themselves creatively and productively. My school is working hard to integrate STEM activities into our curriculum, and our students are responding with enthusiam.

My Project

My project is to have children discover the STEM thru stories and hands on activities in the library. First grade engineers will use Fairy Tale STEM kit to solve the dilemmas faced by characters in Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Billy Goats Gruff, and The Three Little Pigs. Can you imagine the students designing a house that can't be blown down? Think of all the fun these little engineers will have while learning! The Global Challenges Project Kit and Real World kits will allow students to complete projects to solve real-life problems faced around the globe and home—using STEM skills to find solutions. The students will clean up oil spills and prevent flooding. These kits may inspire one of my students to pursue a STEM career! I will be able to have my students explore math and science in learning centers or working at their table to work cooperatively to discover, explore, compare, and contrast data with others in the classroom. These kits are wonderful because every aspect of learning is incorporated.

Giving low-income students access to new technology is an investment in their future.

Tablets will also allow my students to have an easier time accessing the latest scientific discoveries by having the information at their fingertips. I would like for them to be able to use the tablets with apps that focus STEM. One app my students are excited to use Angry Birds. Angry Birds can teach physics, angles and more. The headphones will allow my students to use the tablets in the library without disturbing the other students. The STEM story library tells engaging tales of young engineers, architects and scientists that bring STEM concepts to life.My students' lives will improve by performing meaningful and authentic scientific investigations and making what they are learning come to life.
