Fitness Fun

My students need jump ropes, bean bags, playground balls and a parachute to help them be physically fit.

I am a kindergarten teacher of 14 students. Our school is in a low socioeconomic area with our classroom being part of the inclusion program.

Obesity is becoming a crisis among our children because for some it is safer to stay inside and watch TV than it is to play in front of the apartment/house. It is my goal to encourage my students to be physically fit because when I brought out the few jump ropes I do have, they got hyped. They were so excited. They did their best to share but being five, it can be hard.

I am requesting additional jump ropes so that each child in my class can have a jump rope to use so that we can have a "Jump Off." The double dutch ropes are to teach them how to double dutch. In addition to this, I am asking for bean bags so that we can run relay races for friendly competitions. The balls that I have asked for will be used for team building activities such as over/under passing games, as well as kick-ball. The parachute will be used for building arm strength and control as well team building. The great thing about these items is that I could use them all inside on rainy days, so there is no reason for us to not be fit.

Fitness can be fun. When we teach children to be healthy at an early age, then it becomes a lifestyle not a habit. Helping these students be fit in a fun way will help change their lives in a fun and engaging way. Consider how much you enjoyed recess when you had things to play with. Think about how much joy you will bring to each of these children. The great thing is that funding this project is that it will not only help students this year but for many years to come.
