This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are amazing! Their enthusiasm for learning never ceases to amaze me. They work hard every day, staying engaged with hands-on activities and games that help them practice their skills and increase their knowledge. I love giving them the opportunity. We are a low socioeconomic area and highly diverse school in Central California. Nearly all of my students' learning happens at school. Most of my students have not traveled beyond our city walls. We are a small school - with a big heart!

My Project

My students need heart rate training/activity trackers because they are excited to connect technology to fitness/physical education. When I told them that there would be classwork (such as reading, math, and writing) activities in PE this year, they were not too thrilled. I asked them how I might be able to make that more exciting for them and gave them time in small groups to brainstorm activities. Ideas ranged from going to an NFL game and writing about it to building a stadium. Others thought that it would be great to buy phones for students to play Pokemon Go. One group thought that using heart rate monitors like their parents do to count steps and keeping track of it, even competing, would be fun. I had to agree, especially since an NFL game or an iPhone were probably out of the question!

My students will love increasing their physical fitness levels by learning about the affect of their heart rate on overall fitness.

Students will learn if they are exerting themselves enough or too much. They will be able to track their heart rates as the results are sent directly to the app on their computers. Students will compare the differences between activities such as running, walking, jumping rope, and participating in team sports. Increasing their activity at school will help them achieve 60 minutes of fitness each day. Adding technology to our lessons on physical fitness will certainly put the hands-on into the book work we do and allow me to enhance the lessons on physical fitness, making them altogether much more exciting!
