My students need 27 yoga balls for our fitness class. We hope these yoga balls will provide us with an opportunity to have drum fit lessons and core strengthening opportunities.
Our diverse campus is one of the largest in our district. We are a full Title I school with a significant portion of students enrolled in our bilingual program. This year’s data reveals that more than 64% of our students are considered at-risk and receive free or reduced lunch. Much of the resources at our school are focused on low-performing students; however, with new accountability guidelines including growth of achieving students, we realize the need to push all our students so that they can excel to the next level.
Despite all the challenges and obstacles that lay before our kids, we hope to provide them with an opportunity to learn about proper nutrition, goal setting, and fitness.
My Project
We hope to incorporate yoga balls into our daily/weekly stations where all students safely learn the importance of nutrition and flexibility. During these stations, students will work on the following:
1- Sit-ups
2- Leg extensions
3- Ball Squats
4- Ball Lifts
5- Balance of just sitting on a ball
The yoga balls will also provide all students with an opportunity to participate in a drum fit class which embodies music and movement. Research shows that when movement and music are incorporating into a student's daily routine, test scores, concentration, and transfer of information from short term to long term improve. We don't want to be a school that does the same thing over and over again. Instead, we want our students to have fun as we challenge and make both short term and long term healthy habits.
