My Students
I work with a wonderful group of students who have significant special needs. Most of my students are nonverbal, which means they do not have functional verbal communication yet. They work at a variety of different learning levels. They learn best through real life experiences and hands-on activities. They have a hard time generalizing concepts which makes it important to provide these real experiences for them.
My students love coming to school to learn, interact, and engage with others-especially when participating in physical exercise!
My students are a fantastic group of students and are still learning life skills, academics, and to communicate with others. They use an adaptive bike to help build strength and flexibility to be able to participate in PE and adapted PE.
My Project
My students have multiple disabilities. This can cause weakness and/or motor challenges for my students. Using an adaptive bicycle is a great way to build strength and flexibility. This will also enable them to be stronger participants during PE and adaptive PE.
We have an adaptive bicycle that we can use to help build strength and flexibility, however we also need a helmet, bike pump, and ability to communicate to enhance engagement and safety.
The helmet will be used to protect them in case they fall. The pump will be used to keep our bicycle tires pumped up. The communication app will allow my students to communicate their needs while participating and learning to wait their turn.
