This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students enjoy all of the engaging activities and projects they do during their time in the computer lab. They are anxious to learn using technology tools.
My students are from a high poverty region and are predominantly bilingual or English Language Learners.
They and their families are motivated learners. They are excited to discover and explore. Using technology they are able to move through some of their lessons more slowly, or at a quicker pace, depending on their understanding and mastery.
My Project
My students have been interested in how I use my Fitbit to count steps and monitor my health. We have talked about heart rate and exercise and even sleep patterns. They even asked me, "Can kids use them to get healthier too? Can I get one?" Their interest in this tool has inspired me write these projects (Using Tech to Track Fitness #1-4) asking for donors to get them classroom Fitbits. With these tech tools in their hands we will have conversations about fitness, goal setting, and friendly competitions. We will have showdowns to see who takes the most steps, who is active at least 60 minutes a day, and who is getting good sleep each night. While the Fitbits will show individuals their own stats, the students want to see each others scores too.
We will use the iPad outdoors, with its safety cover just in case our little hands drop it and watch the progress numbers rise as the kids get moving.
When we head back into the classroom, our adapter will allow me to display the charts and graphs on the projector for all of us to see.
Teams can be set up with rotations using the devices. Teammates can teach others how they increased their activity and earned points. Running gets more steps than skipping! Peers will learn from each other in the midst of teamwork and a bit of competition.
