Due to the ongoing publicity regarding obesity in children, I would like to receive a variety of playground equipment to enhance our Physical Education program. I am currently teaching 5th grade in rural Pender County, North Carolina. I team teach with one other teacher and am personally reponsible for 46 children. However, there are 6, 5th grade classes overall for a total of 135 students. Of these 135 students there are appoximately 25 English Language Learners (ELL). There is also a large percent of single parent households and latch key children. Because we live in a rural area, there are no local parks or play areas available to them after school. Unfortunately the students go home and are sedentary for the rest of the day. There are also very few opportunities for children to play recreational sports offered by the county due to financial and transportation constraints. Our county requires 150 minutes of physical activity a week in the public schools but unfortunately the students only have Physical Education once a week. This leaves the balance of their required PE time to the teachers. In order to not just have children walking around an empty playground during recess I would like to have organized activities in which they could participate. I would like to have some playground balls, bases, bats and balls, soccer balls, jump ropes, etc. These materials would be available to all of the 5th grade students. Depending on the conditon of the materials they would be available to students next year as well. I feel it is very important to the students to have these organized physical activities. It would allow the teachers to incorporate team building activities, promote physical fitness, and along with our nutrition lessons in Science, the children could see the importance of living a healthy and active life.
