My Project
My district serves primarily low income students, so one of my main goals is to expose my students to as many cultures, artists and techniques as possible.
My older students are really into anime and manga, so I want to use that connection to go a little further back in time and study the older Japanese art forms of gyotaku and shibori.
Gyotaku is the art of recording a fishing trip that went well by printing fish. We aren't going to print real fish of course, so these detailed fish replica rubber stamp models make a perfect stand in. I'm going to combine the gyotaku lesson with shibori, the historic methods of Japanese tie dyeing, to create a unique seascape.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
