Help me give my students the opportunity to create their very own, personalized fishing rod from scratch. This will include helping those students actually BUILD their own rod.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
What kids in an urban setting need is the opportunity to get outside, step away from their electronic devices, and find something to do. My goal is to help students take the first step by having them invest in a sport and hobby that may just carry them through for the rest of their lives. I am talking about helping them to create their very own fishing rod, which they can personalize and use as soon as we are done. This project will have thirty students (initially) building their own fishing rods. This means we will get the necessary equipment and the "stuff" needed to build thirty fishing rods. That means we will get the rod blanks, the guides, the handles, the cork, the thread and the epoxy.
I'll be clear that this project will not make students in my school any smarter, but it may make them happier and it might just help them to find that "thing" that they might carry with them for the rest of their lives.
Students in my school live in an urban setting, but after running this idea by a few students, I can see there is a great interest in this. This project will not only put fishing rods into the hands of thirty students, but the initial investment in some of the equipment means we can do this for more students at a fraction of the cost in the future. I plan to bring the students in after school on consecutive days to help them build their rods. At the end of the task, I plan to host a "virtual" fishing contest. I will give students a week or two to catch a fish and take a photo. The largest "catch" will earn a special prize I will provide.
