My Students

My students are bright and cheerful kindergarten through second graders who come to me each week for art. They know that learning is important, but they look forward to escaping academics in my classroom. I teach in an inner-city classroom where most of the families are from a low socio-economic background where they struggle to pay for necessities. Luxury items like art supplies fall way down the shopping list.

My students come in ready to do fun art projects and never realize all the learning they are doing while they are with me.

I get students who have never held scissors, do not know how to glue, and have only really drawn in their classroom. For some of my students, holding a pencil or a crayon is still a very new experience.

My Project

Our school is within 5 miles of the Detroit River, so learning about the Great Lakes and stewardship of the waterways is important. The third and fourth grade classes will be learning about things they can do to become stewards of the watersheds in science and social studies classes. They will raise salmon in their classroom to release in the spring, visit the Rouge River to do water quality testing, and hop aboard a research vessel to study the life within Lake Eerie. I would like to add art to their learning about the animals and life within the ecosystem.

We will be doing block printing and Gyotaku fish prints to go along with the watershed and salmon lessons the students are doing in their science classroom.

The goal of the science projects are to create stewards who are compassionate about the flora and fauna of our area and make changes that will keep the watersheds healthy. Adding art to the STEM lessons creates STEAM and a better connection to the animals and organisms within the Great Lakes.

We will use our block printing materials to create posters promoting a healthy watershed. The students will carve their own waterways block to print multiple copies.
