My Students
These past few months have been one of immense change for Hawaii and for the rest of the world. We have had become "alone together" but what does that really mean to a 5 year old. The only thing my kinder kiddies wanted was to go to school. However we are strong, the world will open up (when it is safe) and we will be together again. Things will change as change is inevitable.
Imua...in Hawaii it means to move forward.
It's something that we have done and will continue to do for the sake of our children. Through our actions, we show them what it means to be resilient and to grow. As a "family" we pull together and do what needs to get done. And even after the year is over, we will forever be an ohana.
My Project
As of mid March fiscal restrictions were put on classroom spending due to Covid-19. This means that teachers who usually had till April to put in purchase orders for BASIC and I mean BASIC classroom supplies have been told that they will not be able to get anything they need for the time being.
This is impacts my kindergarten classroom in particular because I teach at a Title I school (more than 50% of my students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch) and many of my kids can't afford the supplies that we put on our list.
In the years past whatever essential supplies they lacked were either purchased with my own money or donated by the school. I anticipate that this year less student will be able to afford and purchase their school supplies and since our school budget is being restricted, the cost will fall on teachers like myself or a child will end up going without certain supplies that their classmates have (like dry erase markers and watercolor paints).
My wishlist contains items I would have put on a purchase order for classroom materials this coming year. My kids would love to explore math, reading, and yes even writing with Play-Doh. They would have a blast learning with the magnetic white boards that we will use with the magnet alphabets I bought from the store.
