First Year Scottish Teacher Sets Up a New Classroom

Help me give my students math manipulatives, tangible rewards for lock box challenges, and art supplies for classroom projects.

My Project

I am a new first year teacher in a school for low income families. I am also originally from Scotland and understand the challenges associated with not having proper educational supports in the classroom.

I am requesting items that will support my students in art, literacy and language development and mathematics, coupled with providing tangible rewards as students meet milestones in their development.

The first set of items supports mathematics. Nearly half of my class has learning challenges and the inclusion of manipulatives will help reinforce the fundamental concepts we will discuss during the school year. I am also requesting graph paper to help scaffold student learning with regards to arrays, area and perimeter. The manipulatives will also be utilized to help with math learning interventions.

The second set of items will support the students in their literacy development in a creative way. I am using "Reading Mysteries" wherein students read stories and discover clues from their reading. These clues help students 'solve' pieces of a puzzle that results in the students obtaining a portion of a combination lock code. Once the students have completed the entire mystery, they are able to utilize their code to unlock a "treasure chest" (called a lock box). Inside, students will be rewarded with pencils, treats, love-to-read bracelets and so forth. This is an activity that will be utilized throughout the year to help students learn more about inferences, context clues and so forth.

The final set of items will support students as they create art projects across various subjects. Supplies include colored pencils, highlighters, markers, craft sticks, glue sticks, art cups and sharpies. Student projects include holiday themed activities, social studies activities, science activities and key information discovery in narrative, informational, and opinion writing texts.
