First Week of School: Getting to Know You!

My students need markers, labels, tape, rulers, card stock, and straws.

My Students

My students walk into our science classroom every day eager to learn something new. I am often greeted with the question of "What are we doing today?" because they know something different, fun, and engaging is likely to happen.

I teach at a Title I school where 100 percent of the students receive free breakfast and lunch.

More than three-quarters of our students are from low-income households. Despite their hardships, our students still come to school every day ready to learn.

My Project

Students tend to be a little nervous the first week of school and the following items are to help them ease into the school year more easily. The white card stock paper will be used to create a name tent/card that will be placed on the students desk throughout the first week. Each day we will add different things to the name tent that will help the student get familiar with the class as well as other members within their group. The markers and the rulers will also be used with this activity.

I want students to feel comfortable right away in my class.

The straws and tape will be used as a team building activity. While trying to build a free standing structure as tall as they can, this will allow the students to interact with their team members and become more comfortable with the classmates around them.

Each student will need to get three labels to place on their three interactive science notebooks that they will be using for the whole year. This will ensure that they will be able to keep up with their notebooks. The labels will help to quickly label their notebooks so that we will be ready to start working in them soon.
