This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Remember the very first book you read and liked? I'm talking about the book that made you want to read more? Many students during our beginning of the year book talk spoke of American Girls, Harry Potter, Cynthia Voight series of novels such as Homecoming, Dicey Song and Solitary Blue. Surprisingly, however, many students haven't experienced that first touch yet.
The first touch of a book that started me on my way to becoming a life time reader was Black Boy by Richard Wright. Soon I was reading Native Son and other books about this author. I couldn't get enough. In college I wrote about him and presented short snapshots of his writing to highlight the magnificient contribution and realism his writing provided me with as a teen-ager. I would appreciate thirty - five copies of Black Boy by Richard Wright in order to share the contribution this author has made to the lives of many of his readers.
I am one of four seventh grade teachers at Dawes Elementary School. Eighty-nine to ninety percent of our students qualify for free or reduced meals.
Teachers have always tried various ways to motivate students to read for pleasure. Some form literature circles, group readings, self-selected books and/or read alouds. Black Boy is still one of my most favorite books. Now, thirty years later, teachers are still looking for ways to encourage that first touch, that encounter with good literature in order to provide students with memories gained from books that are past on from generation to generation.
