This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Like many of us, my students need all the help they can get.

Many are thriving regardless to how little they have while others need all the extra support we can send in their direction.

Because my 5th grade range in reading levels of kindergarten to 6th grade, I am constantly trying to find ways to scaffold lessons and cater to their varied learning modalities while making sure they have all the skills and are challenged to think critically like their counterparts who live in more affluent communities. We all live by John Wooden's motto. "Don't let what you can't do stop you from doing what you can."

My Project

Since the beginning of the year, I've spent countless hours and weekends writing integrated lessons for my students. Lessons that incorporates science, art, technology, math, and engineering in order to prepare my students for the 6 C's of education for the future: thinking critically, developing creativity, utilizing connectivity, communicating clearly, working collaboratively, and embracing culture.

When I read about this opportunity on donors choose from the FIRST funding, I thought this was the stars way of aligning possibilities and opportunities for my students.

Why? How? I recently attended a Saturday PD on Legos in the classroom. It was a long drive and it took time away from my toddler and newborn but I saw it as an invaluable opportunity to bring something back to my students. At the end of the day, I drove home overwhelmed and anxious. Every single teacher at the PD had all the resources and were already doing this in their classrooms. My students just had my energy and ambitious desire to give them something more. No resources. No funding. No Legos. I was the jalopy in the room full of German imports.

So I am taking destiny into my own hands, one finger stroke at a time, hoping the FIRST funding will see that I work at a school classified as highest poverty but has the greatest mind and kindest spirits waiting for cultivation.

Our Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math focus provides great opportunities for students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds to be inspired by STEAM. My 60 5th graders will work in teams to create their robots with the Lego Mindstorms which makes building, programming, and commanding the Lego smarter, faster, and entertaining. They will work in groups to create their designs, plan, and compete with one another. We will host a school-wide exhibit.
