My Students
Save our fingers! The big push in our district is, as it should be, to get our kids so fluent with math basics that they can focus on the actual problem in front of them.
We're a public school in the heart of south east DC.
It's a rough area, with all the challenges that low socio-economic status brings. But my second graders are awesome! They come in ready to learn, generally well-behaved, and full of questions about...everything!
My Project
My kids are already hooked on the First in Math program. They love the certificates, the student of the day pass, everything! We will use it as a station. I'm ahead of the game in that we only have the two and a half computers in the picture so far, but others are coming. During Math I've already started letting kids stay after school to play it. The sounds associated with the program are distracting though, so right now we all play with no sound. Frankly, it's not as cool.
My kids need to get to third grade able to add and subtract mentally with numbers under 20.
This program not only boosts their fluency with that, it also challenges them to problem solve three or even four step addition problems. I've got a few kids who are bored with 10+2, but give them a problem with three addends where they have to add and subtract? They love it! Your donation will help make this program a total, career-long success in my classroom.
