My First Graders love music. They love to sing, they love to dance to music, they like to write songs, and with their very own soprano recorders they can make music!
Did I mention that my students love MUSIC! However, our school does not offer a music program or class. With an overbooked academic agenda each day our students do well, but have very little exposure to the ARTS, which is just as important as developing reading, writing, and mathematical skills. Hence teaching my students to play the soprano recorder would enhance their learning experience beyond what they can retrieve from books.
Each year I attempt to cater to my students' love for music by introducing them to playing the soprano recorder. I attempt to provide each student with their very own recorder. Many quickly realize how challenging playing an instrument can be, but they love every minute. I often see a change in my students' demeanor when I begin our study of learning to play the recorder. The students get excited when they master a piece, and they are even more elated when they all get to showcase their hard work at the school wide Winter Assembly.
With your help you can provide an experience for my students that many of them will never have. Mastering a small musical piece, is a big accomplishment that all of my students look forward to. Music incorporates so many skills, but in a nontraditional way, and that is what makes teaching this unit one of the most memorable for my students.
